Abdominalplasty (better known as the Tummy Tuck)
This is a surgery to remove excess fatty tissue and skin folds in the mid and lower abdominal area and to tighten up the abdominal muscles. This procedure can dramatically reduce the appearance of a protruding abdomen.
There are two main types of Abdominalplasty – a major and a mini tummy tuck. A major tummy tuck requires both the removal of excess fat and skin, as well as to tighten the abdominal wall. A mini-tuck is a quicker and less invasive procedure and requires only the removal of excess fat and skin, and the scar resembles a c-section scar.
A tummy tuck may also be performed in conjunction with a liposuction to remove the unwanted body fat to give better results to the waistline area. In both our London and Dubai clinics, we use the VASER Liposuction system to remove the fat which is a gentler and more efficient method compared to traditional liposuction.
Typical patients
Both men and women opt for this surgical procedure. Patients who typically have the surgery have lost large amounts of weight through diet or after pregnancy. They find they have excess sagging skin in their lower stomach area that won’t budge through diet and exercise. Often in the case of pregnancy, also the muscles of the abdominal wall have been stretched and a tummy tuck can also tighten these muscles.
THE PROCEDURE
Generally, abdominoplasty procedures are performed at the our day hospital, London Centre for Aesthetic Surgery based Dubai Healthcare City. You may or may not stay in hospital overnight.
The procedure is usually carried out under sedation but in some cases, the surgery will be performed under general anaesthesia, so there will be no pain during the surgery and you’ll sleep through the operation. Complete abdominoplasty usually takes between two to five hours depending upon the extent of the work required. A mini tummy-tuck, may take an hour or two. The incision will resemble a c-section scar. For a major tummy tuck, the surgeon will make an incision from hipbone to hipbone, just above the pubis area.
