What is Abdominoplasty?
Abdominoplasty, commonly known as a “tummy tuck”, is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin and fat from the lower abdomen and tighten the muscles of the abdominal wall. This is often mistaken with a liposuction which is just the removal of fat.
Who is a “tummy tuck” appropriate for?
The best candidates for abdominoplasty are men and women who are in relatively good shape but who would like to remove fat deposits or loose skin which won’t budge with diet or exercise. It can be suitable for women post pregnancy when they are not considering any more children to help tighten the tummy muscles and appearance of the skin. And it is also a method of helping with the loss of skin elasticity which frequently occurs with slight obesity. It is not suitable for people intending to loose further weight after surgery or for women planning more pregnancies.
What are the alternatives?
You may also consider a partial abdominoplasty, know as a “mini tummy tuck” or liposuction. A partial tummy tuck is appropriate where less fat needs to be removed and the fat deposits are confined to the area below the navel. The recovery period and severity of the scaring are reduced along with the length of operation time when undergoing a partial abdominoplasty. Liposuction can also be used either in conjunction with or as an alternative to abdominoplasty.
Will my stomach be the perfect shape after a tummy tuck?
It all depends on the size and shape of your tummy at the time of planning any procedure. It is important to remember that abdominoplasty can enhance your appearance and self-confidence but it won’t necessarily change your looks to match your ideal figure. However successful surgery can dramatically reduce the appearance of a protruding abdomen and should result in your tummy being smoother and flatter.
How painful is the procedure and how long is the recovery for a tummy tuck?
During the operation, which will take 2-3 hours, you will be sedated and so will not feel anything. However you are likely to feel some pain and discomfort shortly after the procedure which can be managed with medication. The procedure for an abdominoplasty is a major surgery and as such you should expect a 2-4 week recovery period. In Dubai, the surgery will take place as our day hospital based in Dubai Healthcare City, and you will return home the same day. In some cases, for larger tummy tucks, we can also arrange an overnight hospital stay.
Your plastic surgeons, Drs Roberto and Maurizio Viel, will discuss the best approach to help you achieve your ideal look and goals.
