The Ageing Face
Ageing is a natural, multi-faceted process that causes physical changes over a period of time and is most obvious on the face. It may vary dramatically for each individual and is influenced by genetic factors. The facial changes that occur in ageing can exhibit as wrinkles, facial lines, saggy skin and the loss of facial volume.
What can we do to abate ageing?
There are few facial rejuvenation treatments that can help lessen and somehow improve these changes. The most common non-invasive treatments are botox and dermal filler. However, for individuals who have significant sagging skin, a surgical facelift may be the best option.
Facelift: Lifting the lower face
There are several techniques by which a facelift may be performed but here in the London Centre for Aesthetic Surgery Gulf, Dr Maurizio and Dr Roberto use the MACS lift technique.
MACS (Minimal Access Cranial Suspension) lift is a facelift technique which uses permanent purse-string threads anchored on the deep facial ligament to lift the lower face. The incisions are well hidden as it is made starting from the temporal hairline, passing through the frontal natural curve of the ear (tragus) going to the back of the earlobe.
The Facelift Procedure
MACS lift usually takes around a couple of hours to a couple and a half. The procedure is done as a day surgery case under sedation and patients are able to go home the same day.
Immediately after the surgery, a sterile surgical dressing will be applied on the wounds and the face will be supported using a compression garment. The garment is most useful in lessening the swelling and improve the overall result and will be worn for a week.
As with all minor or major operations, bruising and swelling are common but will lessen after a few weeks. There may be asymmetry on the face because of the swelling but will eventually resolve in time.
After the MACS lift
Following the operation, avoid any heavy lifting or straining and take sufficient time off from work to allow for a full recovery. Eat soft foods during the first week. You may already notice an improvement in appearance once the swelling has gone down, however, the final result will take a few months.
MACS lift can significantly improve a saggy facial skin and can be combined with other treatments such as autologous (one’s own) fat injection to the cheeks, dermal fillers or botox to achieve the best optimal results. The type of combination treatment greatly varies from each individual needs and should be discussed with the surgeon upon consultation.
