FACE AND NECK LIFT

Our faces and necks are the parts of our body which are most exposed to the outside elements and therefore are most effected by the ageing process.  Wrinkles, lines and loose skin on the face and neck result from the passage of time and perhaps too much sun, maybe a sign of a full life and can result in a tired appearance.  For those people who still feel young at heart, a face and neck lift can restore a more rested and youthful appearance.

Face and neck lift procedures can improve the appearance of wrinkles and lines, but are best for alleviating loose skin around the mouth and nose, jawline (jowls) and to improve the contour of the neck.

A face and neck lift is an operation most successfully carried out in both men and women between the ages of forty to sixty.  However we believe that a person should have a face-lift when they feel ready for it and when they can best enjoy the benefits.  The anti-ageing benefits of a face lift can delay ageing and will last for many years, however they cannot stop the natural ageing process altogether.

We have provided a form on the website if you would like to request further information or an appointment. The cost of a consultation is £130. Alternatively if you prefer the telephone we are happy to take your call.

Before your surgery
In the week before your surgery you should not take any medications containing aspirin (acetyl salicylic acid) as these products affect the bloods clotting mechanism and therefore may lead to excessive bleeding during and after surgery, hence resulting in increased bruising.  Taking high doses of vitamin E preparations, eating large amounts of garlic and consuming alcohol can also produce the same result and should be avoided.  If pain medication is necessary, we recommend you take ibuprofen/paracetamol.

It is in your own best interests to quit smoking at least two weeks before and until two weeks after surgery.  It is well known that smoking causes narrowing of the blood vessels which leads to a decreased blood supply to the skin, thus slowing and interfering with the healing process.

Be sure to inform your surgeon of any medications you take as well as possible allergies including (drug, latex, plasters and so on).

Your surgeon will decide whether preliminary examinations are necessary, such as blood tests, an electrocardiogram, or x-rays of the lungs.  If this is the case these tests should be performed several weeks before the surgery.

Face and Neck Lift surgery usually takes place under general anaesthetic in the private hospital.  It is best not to wear any makeup when you come in for your operation and wear loose clothing that does not need to be pulled over your head.  You may also want to bring a scarf to cover the bandages on the way home.

Make certain you have someone to collect you and stay with you overnight after the surgery.  You are not allowed to drive a car for 48 hours after the surgery, due to the effects of the anaesthetic.
Your Face and neck lift procedure
Your procedure will be performed under general anaesthetic at the Highgate Private Hospital, usually as a day procedure but you may need to stay overnight in hospital.

The procedure involves lifting the underlying muscle and tightening the skin of the face resulting in a smooth, wrinkle free appearance.  The incisions are made around the upper hairline, around the ear lobe and behind the ear into the hair to allow the skin to be undermined or separated from the underlying tissue.  The muscles and loosened skin are then tightened-up with specifically placed sutures (stitches), excess skin or tissue is removed and the skin is repositioned to create a rejuvenated appearance.  If there is the need to reduce a double chin, a small incision is made under the chin and the excess fat is removed with liposuction.  If required, eyelid or forehead surgery can be performed simultaneously to provide a more completely rejuvenated look.

The operation is carefully planned and performed to minimise scarring, which will fade and be barely noticable after healing.
After your face and neck lift procedure
Loose bandages will be applied around the face which are then removed the day following your procedure and a tight fitting facial band will be applied.  This is worn for 4 days to help the skin heal back to the underlying tissue.  The stitches will be removed after one week, and swelling and bruising generally subsides within two weeks.

Tightness and numbness of the face may occur for a while but as full healing after surgery is an ongoing process, most patients will not see the full results for about six weeks.  The degree of improvement can vary, depending upon age and condition of the skin prior to surgery and the extent of surgery.

All surgery carries some risks and uncertainties
Even when performed by a qualified surgeon there are possible risks associated with all cosmetic procedures.  As the face and neck lift is a minimally invasive procedure these risks are few and generally easily treated however, you must be aware of them.  These include bleeding, infection, reaction to the anaesthetic drugs, asymmetry of facial features, temporary facial numbness or paralysis.  No cosmetic surgery procedure can stop time.  A face-lift can turn back the clock and be effective for a number of years.  How long the effects last will also depend on your lifestyle and possible genetic factors.

If you have any further questions or queries about this procedure, please feel free to call and speak to either Dr Roberto Viel, Dr Maurizio Viel or any of our nurses.  Please note that it is necessary to attend a consultation prior to your operation, this is also the case with existing patients, it may also be necessary to have repeat blood test.
