Beauty Junkie
Kathryn inhabits another world - that of the beauty junkie. Here, real life is squeezed around trips to manicurists, masseurs, salons and surgeries. For, as women win more status and more money, the pressure to look perfect is stronger than ever. Kate Wake-Walker is [also] one of them. ...Every three months she visits the plastic surgeon to have her wrinkles injected....

Her day can end with a visit to cosmetic surgeons Roberto and Maurizio Viel. While she may have a facelift when she gets older, right now Kate keeps wrinkles at bay with a threee-monthly injection of botulinum, a toxin that, in very small doses, paralyses the facial muscles to stop her frowning, thus preventing lines....

While she's here, Kate finishes off with a 45 minute face mask. This entails wearing a paper mask impregnated with products designed to add moisture to the skin, equivalient to a year's worth of cream. Suddenly, she looks like the Phantom of the Opera. But apparently, it's worth it. "Fine lines will disappear, the skin looks younger," promises Roberto. "It is a great thing to have if you want to look good for a special evening." Kate leaves looking marginally better - her skin appears fresher, more elastic.
